UpCloud

Going up?

Consider fortrabbit as an alternative to UpCloud, especially if you want to get started quickly.

# About UpCloud

UpCloud is a European cloud infrastructure provider based in Finland. They offer scalable virtual machines, block storage, private networking, and access to a global network of data centers. UpCloud is much smaller than hyperscalers like Google Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services, and is more comparable to Hetzner. Understand that they don't operate data centers themselves. Their services are well-suited for solo developers and small businesses.

We are still considering UpCloud as an alternative to AWS for hosting our own infrastructure. Not only is it more affordable, but it also allows for a more direct and personal relationship with the provider. Should you use UpCloud instead of fortrabbit? It depends.

# Why fortrabbit

Choose fortrabbit if you want a higher level of abstraction and a faster launch—no DevOps skills required. You can always scale up as your needs grow.

  • Managed platform: fortrabbit takes care of scaling, security, backups, and updates.
  • Developer experience: Enjoy Git-based deployments, Composer, and modern PHP workflows out of the box.
  • No sysadmin required: Focus on your app, not on server maintenance or patching.
  • Integrated services: Benefit from built-in SSL, domain management, environment management, and more.
  • Lower cost of ownership: With fortrabbit, you get a ready-made infrastructure that runs on shared resources and leverages multiple AWS services. Our entry-level plans use shared resources—similar to shared hosting, but with better isolation and security. We save you time by handling setup and ongoing maintenance, so you can focus on development. Our Platform as a Service eliminates the typical headaches of managing servers.
