Our environmental measures
🌳
Green by todays standards. Not enough we think.
Here are our actions and design decisions aiming to reduce the environmental impact of our service.
# Infrastructure provider
The fortrabbit is powered by Amazon Web Services. Notably, Amazon is actively working towards achieving climate neutrality. By 2022 they reached 90% renewable energy across all their data centers, aiming for 100% in 2025. They also try to use less water for cooling and consume less energy in the first place. While we don't believe every word on their sustainability marketing pages, we do hope that they use their power for good. Since prices for renewable energies are going down, there is also financial insensitive to speed this up.
www.fortrabbit.com runs on our platform as well. We get A grade green hosting ratings on these two services:
- websitecarbon.com/website/fortrabbit-com
- thegreenwebfoundation.org/green-web-check/?url=www.fortrabbit.com
The same applies for websites you are hosting here. So you can slab a "green hosting" label on your website, which might be well received with your client and the end users.
# Energy efficient design
Our pricing structure is designed to enable developers to only book required resources, so we collectively consume less energy compared to traditional hosting solutions. Less over-provisioning is not only good for the wallet but also better for the environment.
# Offsetting
We are sponsoring environmental projects, since 2020. We support Atmosfair (classical offsetting programs) and Project Earth (restoration) with monthly donations.
# Other measures
- Lean operations as a remote first company
- Blocking bad bots with the Web Application Firewall
- Customer education
# Not enough
Comparing our carbon dioxide emissions as noted by the AWS footprint calculator with our CO2 offsetting shows that we are operating on a CO2 negative level. Too good to be true. A data center made of concrete housing large metal cages producing a lot of heat is not as green as a forest. And CO2 is not the only environmental impact here.
The internet is made of routers, switches and cables. All that infrastructure requires energy too. Websites are displayed on computers that need energy too. Clouds are not green.
