Coolify alternative for PHP hosting

Coolify is free, open source and well made. The server under it still costs money, needs patching and wants someone on call. Consider fortrabbit.

About Coolify

Coolify is open-source server management software. It runs as a control panel on top of the servers you choose: Hetzner, DigitalOcean, AWS, Vultr and friends. You provision the instance, Coolify automates containers, deployments and SSL. The self-hosted edition is free without feature gates, and Coolify Cloud hosts the panel for a few dollars a month. It's one of the most-starred hosting projects on GitHub, and it earned the stars.

Why not Coolify?

It's a good fit if you want full ownership of the box and you are fine handling OS patches, backups and incident response yourself. Coolify lists available package updates, but someone has to install them.

PHP on Coolify means building a Docker image: PHP version, extensions, FPM, OPcache, a worker and a cron entry. It works. It also drifts, and somebody has to own that Dockerfile when the next PHP version comes out. And you pay twice: for the server, and for the panel or your time.

Why fortrabbit

Responsibility: We aim for less yak-shaving. fortrabbit abstracts the plumbing and gives you a single point of contact for billing and technical questions. See our legal section for the boring but important bits.

App hosting: Our platform is service oriented. You launch and scale apps, not servers. Read about our app hosting architecture.

PHP runtime: Tuned and version-pinned by us. No Dockerfile, and workers and cron jobs are dashboard settings.

Pricing: You pay for the app. Entry plans fit small sites, scaling stays predictable.

Human support: Talk to us in chat, not a bot and not a Discord thread at midnight. See our support features.

Frequently asked

Coolify is free. Why pay for fortrabbit?
The server is not free

The server is not free - The self-hosted edition costs nothing. The server under it does, and so do off-server backups, monitoring and the hours spent on updates and incidents. fortrabbit puts the runtime, MySQL and the infrastructure in one plan.

#
Who handles OS updates on fortrabbit?
We do

We do - OS patches, monitoring and the AWS infrastructure are our responsibility. Coolify lists available package updates, but a person has to install them.

#
Can Docker images or Node.js services run on fortrabbit?
No

No - fortrabbit runs PHP. A project that needs arbitrary containers or a polyglot stack on one box belongs on Coolify.

What customers say

Having fortrabbit is like having a dedicated DevOps engineer on the team, taking care of the infrastructure so we can focus on writing code. We've used many PaaS providers, but none come close to fortrabbit's mix of features, reliability, predictable and fair pricing, and fast, genuinely helpful support. Their service has been rock solid, giving us the confidence that our apps are in good hands.

2026 — Direct feedback

Unmatched performances and ease-of-configure. I really like what fortrabbit is doing for the modern PHP hosting ecosystem, and I'd suggest anyone to have a try with them.

I just wanted to say that the documentation that you guys have and the service you provided me while I was initially setting everything up was probably the best I've encountered in my 20-ish years of front-end web development. Your dashboard is super simple and it has all of the right things for someone like me, and none of the fluff that isn't necessary.
