> Every fortrabbit environment books a backup plan, from one daily copy at €0.50 a month. Full file and MySQL backups, encrypted, offsite, restored from the dashboard.

fortrabbit is managed PHP hosting with backups included: the backup component is booked with every environment. The smallest plan keeps one daily copy for €0.50 a month, the largest keeps 48 copies for €64. Each backup is full, a complete archive of the environment's files plus a mysqldump of the database when a MySQL component is booked. Backups run once every 24 hours at a randomized time, and a manual backup can be started from the dashboard before a risky deploy. Copies are encrypted and stored on object storage in the app's region, Ireland or Virginia, separate from the web storage, and they do not count towards the storage plan. Restore is self-service from the dashboard, and every backup can be downloaded as files. Production and staging environments are backed up separately, each with its own plan. There is no point-in-time recovery and no committed recovery time; the dashboard lists every stored backup with date and size, plus the time of the next one.

## What a backup contains

| Question | Answer |
| -- | -- |
| Scope | Environment files and a `mysqldump` of its database |
| Type | Full, no incremental or differential |
| Frequency | Every 24 hours, plus manual backups |
| Location | Encrypted object storage in the app's region |
| Restore | Dashboard, or download the files |
| Monitoring | fortrabbit is alerted on failed jobs |

Cache and log paths are left out of the archive. Auditors asking under ISO 27001 or ISO 22301 get the same table in the [backup docs](https://docs.fortrabbit.com/platform/components/backups), with the excludes spelled out. There are no success mails; the dashboard is the record.

## Backup plans and prices

| Plan | Copies kept | Per month |
| :--- | ---: | ---: |
| XS | 1 | €0.50 |
| SM | 3 | €4 |
| MD | 6 | €8 |
| LG | 12 | €16 |
| XL | 24 | €32 |
| 2XL | 48 | €64 |

The plan is changed per environment at any time. Like every component, it is billed by the day and in arrears. Prices are the same number in USD. The [backups feature page](/features/backups) lists the use cases, from a deleted template to a hacked site.

## Where a backup is not the answer

A backup restores an environment to yesterday. It does not replace version control for code, which lives in the Git repository, and it does not catch a bug that has been writing wrong data for a week. Test on a [staging environment](/php-hosting/with-staging-environments) first.

## FAQ

### Are backups optional?

**No** — Every environment books a backup plan. The smallest keeps one daily copy for €0.50 a month, which is why the smallest environment costs €2.50 rather than €2.

### How is a backup restored?

**From the dashboard** — Pick the backup in the environment's backups section and restore it. Files and database come back as they were at that time. A restore takes minutes to hours depending on size; there is no committed recovery time.

### Is there point-in-time recovery?

**No** — Each backup is a full snapshot: a complete file archive plus a complete mysqldump. There are no incremental backups and no binlog replay. A manual backup before a risky change covers most of that gap.
